"Standard" Power Option

The “Standard” Power Option is the most common way to run it. I prefer to always motion over our outside WR in order to force the outside CB to shift inside, giving the defense less outside leverage.

Adjustments

  • Read the Defense Pre-Snap

    • If there is no CB lined up outside on the side opposite the direction of the option, then use the instant jurdle move I describe in the next section

    • If there is a CB lined up outside on the side opposite the direction of the option, then motion over the outside WR. If a defender crosses the formation with the WR, then run the option as I describe below. If no defender crosses the formation with the WR, then perform the instant jurdle move with your WR now serving as the lead blocker

  • Identify the Pitch Key defender, who will have a “P” icon above his head

  • After the snap, hesitate with the QB by initially pointing your left stick in the direction of the option and then letting go. The hesitation with the QB is crucial for making sure we have enough time to read the pitch key and perform a clean pitch.

  • If the pitch key attacks the QB, then pitch to the RB by pressing Lb or L1. If the pitch key does not attack the QB, then continue running with the QB.

"Reverse" Power Option

The “Reverse” Power Option is an alternate version of the play that involves manipulating the Pitch Key pre-snap. I consider this version to be more “Boom or Bust”, and while sometimes will result in no gain, it also has the biggest “home run” potential of any run play in this scheme.

Adjustments

  • Come out with your twins WRs lined up on the short side of the field

  • Flip your option by flicking the right stick in the direction away from your WRs

  • Motion over your outside WR, and snap the ball just as he gets to the TE (you ideally want to press the hike button just before he gets to the TE so that it will snap the ball just after he gets to the TE)

  • If timed correctly, the pitch key (typically a DE) will get switched to a safety or linebacker. This means the DE who was previously the pitch key will now get blocked, allowing you to take a sharper angle on your option and giving you the potential to turn upfield with your QB for potentially huge gains
